I went and spent the afternoon with my Little Sister! (I'm now a mentor with Big Brothers/Big Sisters!) She is great! I was so excited to hang out with her, I couldn't sleep this morning when I got off work. I had a blast just chillin with her and getting to know what makes her tick. It was weird to face the 14 year old version of myself! With several distinct differences and far more similarities, this young girl had all the makings of Paula Kay 12 years ago. I am just so glad I'm out of that awful phase of my life. That is a simply terrible time in a young woman's life.
I could tell she was testing me with some of the comments she made to me today. I just told her that I was not there to judge, change or fix her. I was just there to be her friend. I could tell that was the answer she needed and desperately wanted. So, we will see where this goes. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to give back. It feels amazing to give time, energy and love to a complete stranger. Try it and see!
